Studies
Selection of conditions for study
Individuals or organizations, may apply to study a condition and applications will undergo a process of peer review and revision to ensure suitability and acceptable methodology. Applications will include an administrative fee of $5000.
The Research Advisory Committee of ORIA (The Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia) will be responsible for the peer review. The major criteria defining the suitability of a study are:
- A predicted annual population incidence of less than 1 in 100 000 per year (250 cases/year)
- Scientifically robust methodology
- Condition is of public health or scientific importance, or has an implication for service provision and provides information that is not available from elsewhere
Maximal and unbiased case ascertainment is a high priority. Investigators should use multiple sources for case ascertainment where possible. Conditions are usually studied for one year. Two years or more may be required for very rare conditions to ascertain sufficient cases for study.
Examples of conditions to be considered for study:
- Octopus Strap Eye Injuries
- Young Vein Occlusions
- Hydrops in Keratoconus
- Conjunctival Squamous Cell Carcinoma
- Endophthalmitis
